    About Airborne

On September 17, 1944, the Allied Forces launched Operation Market Garden. A major airborne operation had to take the bridges before the Germans could blow them up or occupy them. Subsequently, a land operation would relieve these troops. The operation suffered from poor communication, delays and unexpected heavy setbacks. The ultimate goal, to create a passage from Belgium to the bridge at Arnhem, failed. Despite all the English efforts, the bridge at Arnhem could not be kept.Every year Arnhemse Rugby Club The Pigs organizes a tournament for youth, women and men in memory of these events.

    About Airborne

On September 17, 1944, the allied forces launched a major operation called Market Garden. An airborne operation, called Market, would have to take the bridges before the Germans could blow them up or occupy them. Subsequently, a land operation called Garden would relieve these troops.Operation Market Garden came as a complete surprise to the German troops. Still, they soon managed to mount a defense that grew stronger as the battle progressed. In addition, the British also experienced the necessary problems, such as poor communication, delays and unexpected severe setbacks.Fierce battles ensued to keep the bridge in British hands, but after four days the resistance of the German army proved to be too strong and the British had to surrender at the bridge. The ultimate goal, to create a passage from Belgium to the bridge at Arnhem, failed.Operation Market Garden should have ended the war in Europe before Christmas and allowed allied troops to return home after a long battle. In memory of this battle and those who fought for our freedom, Arnhem Rugby Club The Pigs organizes the Airborne/Road to Liberation Tournament every year. A rugby tournament with an official touch for youth, men and women.
